Gytha Thorgilsdotter Estridsen van Denemarken

Vader: Thorgils Sprakling Estridsen van Denemarken
Moeder: NN
  • Geboren: ± 997
  • Countess of Wessex ( 1019 - 1053 ), Nun at Saint-Omer
  • Overleden: ± 1069 (ongeveer 72 jaar oud)

Not to be confused with her granddaughter and namesake. Gytha and Godwin had at least ten children. Three of them were Earls. Two of them faced each other on 25 Sep 1066 at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, where Tostig, Earl of Northumbria, was killed. The surviving Earl, Harold, was the last Anglo-Saxon to be the King of England but he died with his brothers Gyrth and Leofwine, Earl of Kent, at the Battle of Hastings on 14 Oct 1066.

At that time, Gytha was in Exeter. She is thought to be the cause of that city's rebellion, forcing William the Conqueror to lay the siege against it in 1067. He had already confiscated all the family estates of the Godwinsons so Gytha left England with the wives, widows and families of other prominent Anglo-Saxons. She afterwards disappeared from the chronicles but it is thought she went to Scandinavia, where she had relatives.

Her youngest son, Wulnoth, enjoyed a pleasant captivity in Normandy until 1087, when the Conqueror died. Her eldest daughter, Edith ( ca 1025 - 19 Dec 1075 ), was the Queen Consort and widow of King Edward the Confessor.
